So, what is CBD? Cannabidiol is an important phytochemical found in many kinds of plants. It’s one of the most abundant compounds in cannabis, accounting for up to 40 percent of the plant’s mass. Medical studies have shown that the human body metabolizes CBD into compounds that may help reduce seizure disorders, muscle spasms, and even some symptoms of depression. In fact, there are currently clinical trials involving CBD and chronic pain management, two areas currently at the forefront of medical practice.

But what makes CBD such a hot topic these days? Recent news stories have highlighted the potential for CBD to be a treatment or therapy for a variety of medical conditions and illnesses. In November, the Mayo Clinic released a study detailing the potential for CBD to help treat children with diseases such as epilepsy and MS. Researchers at the University of Louisville recently published research in the Fertility and Sterility journal indicating that CBD might play a role in the growth of male sperm.

Why is CBD being eyed as a treatment or cure for a wide range of conditions? Recent news stories have focused on a handful of potential ailments that CBD products containing cbd could help treat. Two of the more prominent ones are autism and Crohn’s disease. However, CBD has been studied for more than 20 years, and there’s no evidence to suggest that it isn’t effective for a number of other conditions and illnesses. Whether or not CBD is the answer to your health care needs will depend largely on your individual situation. Here are some things to consider when researching the potential of CBD as a dietary supplement and in your daily life.

In December of 2021, the FDA approved a study concerning the safety and efficacy of three different types of CBD dietary supplements. The three different products, from BioLogic, MyQ chemical and OTC BioCBD, were evaluated in clinical trials by the FDA. At the conclusion of the clinical trial, which was funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the three companies were granted approval for sale of their products in the US. With the FDA seal of approval, CBD is now available for anyone to purchase over the counter in states where medical cannabis is legal.

In late 2021, the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) will decide if the CBD should be legalized across the country. The timing of this announcement is important, as the federal government is debating whether or not it should move forward with legislation that would legalize medical cannabis in several states without regulating the sale of CBD. Right now, fourteen states permit the sale and taxation of CBD. If the FDA decides against legalized CBD in 2021, then those states could lose out on an estimated twelve million annual patients. For now, the focus is on the FDA issuing its decision on the safety and efficacy of CBD as a prescription drug.
